The Christofle company was founded in 1830 by Charles Christofle (1805-1863). Stemming from a family of industrialists specialized in the work of precious metal, the latter is 15-years-old when he becomes the apprentice of his brother-in-law Hugues Calmette, a manufacturer of “jewels of province.”
Succeeding King Louis Philippe, Emperor Napoleon III orders, from 1851, all the official dinner services of the Empire from Christofle. His titles of “Silversmith of the King” and “Supplier of the Emperor” are going to allow Christofle to become famous and be sought after by foreign sovereigns as well.
A player in and privileged witness to the evolution of taste, customs, and traditions, Christofle has always seen its name associated with major creative trends, renowned artists such as Man Ray or Jean Cocteau, avant-garde architects such as Gio Ponti, and modernist silversmiths such as Lino Sabattini and Christian Fjerdingstad, as well as Andrée Putman, Marcel Wanders, Ora Ïto, Jean-Marie Massaud or Eric Schmitt.
